1. Certification Introduction

FSSC 22000 is a scheme known as Food Safety System Certification 22000, developed in 2009 by the Foundation for Food Safety Certification (the Netherlands). It is a new scheme for the food manufacturing sector, built on ISO 22000, PAS 220 (i.e., ISO/TS 22002-1) and the FSSC 22000 certification scheme. In 2010, it was recognized by GFSI as a global benchmark for food safety management.

The FSSC 22000 certification scheme sets out the audit and certification requirements for the food safety management systems and quality management systems of organizations across the food supply chain.

Its GFSI recognition is intended to ensure that it continually meets the requirements of the international food industry and that certified organizations supply safe food to their customers. FSSC 22000 combines the ISO 22000 food safety management system, ISO/TS 22002 and additional requirements.

Building on HACCP principles, it takes into account the needs of numerous retailers and food safety requirements as well as business development needs, systematically integrating food safety and system elements to support the sound development of enterprises. It can be fully integrated into a company's overall management system and remains consistent with standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

FSSC 22000 is a global, auditable food safety management system standard that combines prerequisite programmes, HACCP principles and other management system requirements, providing a unified approach to food safety management for companies across the food supply chain, and one that is readily accepted, implemented and audited by organizations at every link of the chain.

Leading food manufacturers such as Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Kraft, Nestlé and Unilever have adopted, or are progressively adopting, it as a standard within their supplier approval schemes; international retail giants such as Carrefour and Walmart are likewise progressively adopting this global food safety certification as a supplier requirement.

based on HACCP principles, FSSC 22000 applies the principles and methods of food technology, microbiology, quality control and risk assessment to identify hazards and evaluate hazards and risks across the entire food chain — from crop growing and harvesting, raw materials and ingredients, processing, manufacturing, transport and distribution, to preparation and consumption. It carries out a systematic and comprehensive analysis of potential hazards, identifies the "critical control points" at which hazards can be effectively prevented, reduced or eliminated, and then controls the hazardous factors at those points, ensuring food safety and hygiene and effectively eliminating food contamination.

The FSSC 22000 certificate is valid for 3 years, with annual surveillance audits and a recertification audit at the end of the validity period to issue a new certificate. FSSC-certified organizations are listed in the official public register of certified organizations (www.fssc22000.com/certified-organizations/) to facilitate public enquiries and certification traceability.

2. Certification Targets and Scope

The FSSC 22000 standard is applicable to all organizations in the food chain, whatever their size and complexity. Directly or indirectly involved organizations include those engaged in animal farming, food processing, feed production, food additives, catering, the production of food packaging and packaging materials, retail/wholesale, and transport, storage and distribution services.

Mérieux's current certification scope mainly covers certification in food processing and related fields; please click to view.
